This division reviews protests to the | | issuance of licenses and permits by local authorities and citizens | | and prosecutes application protests by the commission. When | | violations by permittees and licensees throughout the state are | | alleged, a hearing is held by the State Office of Administrative | | Hearings. Outcomes of such hearings include recommendations to | | cancel, suspend, grant, or deny a license or permit. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | The intern selected for this position will gain knowledge in the | | Texas Alcoholic Beverage Code, legal processes, and other hands-on | | legal experience. This two month internship position performs routine | | (journey-level) clerical work for the Office of General Counsel | | Division. Work involves legal research, preparation of contested | | cases, assisting in processing of open records requests, and related | | tasks. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | GENERAL DESCRIPTION: | | | | | | | | | | | | Performs complex (journey-level) legal research and analysis work. | | Work involves examining, preparing, and evaluating legal documents, | | conducting legal research, and providing assistance to agency | | attorneys. Works under general supervision, with moderate latitude | | for the use of initiative and independent judgment. | | | | | | | | | | | | | +-----------------------------------------------------------------------+ Essential Job Functions ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS (EJFs): (25%) Advises agency staff on legal matters and on the interpretation and application of agency laws and regulations. (25%) Provides legal research and consultation to Executive Management, General Counsel and programs on legal matters, on the interpretation and application of agency regulations, and state and federal laws. (25%) Prepares and organizes legal documents, briefs, correspondence, and reports. (20%) Assists with agency responses to open records requests. (5%) Performs related work as assigned. MQs, KSA, License/Certifications +-----------------------------------------------------------------------+ | MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: | | | | - Currently pursuing or enrolled in an accredited law school or | | graduated from an accredited law school with a Bachelor of Laws | | (LLB) or a Juris Doctor (JD) degree. | | - Completion of a minimum of 4 semesters of law school. | | | | | | PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: | | | | - Legal employment experience (law clerk, paralegal, legal | | assistant, etc.). | | - Experience in research and case discovery. | +-----------------------------------------------------------------------+ | KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: | | | | - Knowledge of office procedures; of spelling, punctuation, | | grammar, and arithmetic; and of business or program terminology, | | methods, and procedures. | | - Skill in using a personal computer and office equipment. | | - Ability to prepare and maintain records, files, and reports, and | | to communicate effectively. | | - Ability to work as a team member.
