This is the same Ministry of Labour & Employment scheme that pays for school children of beedi, mine and cine workers, continued past Class 10 — and this is where the money becomes worth real effort: ₹25,000 a year for a professional course, against ₹2,000 a year in Class 10.
Whose children can apply
Either of your parents must have at least six months of service as:
- A beedi worker
- A worker in iron ore, manganese ore or chrome ore mines (IOMC)
- A worker in limestone or dolomite mines (LSDM), or mica mines
- A cine worker
Contract workers and Gharkhata — home-based — workers are explicitly included in the guidelines.
The income limits
- Beedi workers: family income from all sources not more than ₹10,000 a month
- Mine workers doing manual, unskilled, highly skilled or clerical work: eligible whatever their wages. The ₹10,000 limit applies only to supervisory and managerial staff
- Cine workers: not more than ₹8,000 a month, or ₹1,00,000 paid as a lump sum or in instalments
What you get
Rates per year, enhanced with effect from the 2022-23 academic year:
- Class 11 and 12 — ₹3,000
- ITI — ₹6,000
- Polytechnic — ₹6,000
- Degree courses, including B.Sc. Agriculture — ₹6,000
- Professional courses — ₹25,000
The published rate table stops at professional courses and does not list a separate postgraduate rate, so if you are applying for a master's course, ask your institute's scholarship cell which rate the portal will apply to you before you count on a figure.
Money is paid by DBT into the student's own bank account. Each scholar needs a separate account — first name on a joint account must be the student's — and a separate mobile number.
The first-attempt rule, and the two course rules people trip on
- You must have passed the last qualifying examination in the first attempt. Students promoted to the next class are also eligible
- You cannot get this for studying at the same stage of education in a different subject — a B.Sc. after a B.Com., a B.Com. after a B.A., or an M.A. in one subject after an M.A. in another
- You cannot get it for a second professional line after completing one — the guidelines give LL.B. after B.T. or B.Ed. as the example
- Correspondence courses do not qualify, and the institution must be a Government or Government-recognised one in India
- You cannot hold any other scholarship or stipend alongside this
When it can be taken back
The scholarship is cancelled for a false statement, for discontinuing studies, for changing your subject or institution without the Welfare Commissioner's prior approval, for irregular attendance or unsatisfactory progress — and if your parent ceases to be a beedi, mine or cine worker. Money already paid is recovered from the student or the parents.
Documents to keep ready
- A photograph
- A copy of the worker parent's identity card. For mine workers, the Form B Register number
- Front page of the bank passbook or a cancelled cheque
- The passing certificate or marksheet of the previous academic year
- An income certificate issued by the Revenue Authority
How to apply
Apply on the National Scholarship Portal at scholarships.gov.in before 31 October 2026. Complete your One Time Registration, then apply under the Ministry of Labour & Employment's financial assistance scheme for the wards of beedi, cine, IOMC and LSDM workers. Your institute verifies the application on the portal after you submit it, so do not leave it to the last week.
If there is a younger brother or sister still in school at home, their half of this scheme closes earlier — 31 August 2026 — with rates from ₹1,000 to ₹2,000 a year.
Dates checked on 5 August 2026. Deadlines in India move without notice, so confirm on the official portal linked above before you apply.
