What it is

An official statement of your family's annual income from all sources, issued by the revenue authority, usually the tehsildar, SDM or equivalent. Your parent's salary slip is not a substitute.

Where to apply

Most states now accept applications online through their citizen service portal, and many also accept them at a Common Service Centre. Some still require a visit to the tehsil office.

What you usually need to provide

- Aadhaar of the applicant and the parent
- Ration card or another family identity document
- Proof of address
- A self-declaration of family income, and salary slips or an affidavit if applicable

How long it takes

Commonly one to three weeks, longer when offices are busy. This is exactly why you should apply for it in August rather than in the last week of October.

One thing to check

Most scholarship schemes want a certificate issued within the current financial year. Before you upload an existing one, check its issue date against what the scheme asks for.
