Read this part before anything else, because it is where most applicants lose the year.

Knight-Hennessy is not an application to Stanford. It is a second, separate application that runs alongside one. To become a Knight-Hennessy scholar you must apply to, be accepted by, and enrol in a full-time Stanford graduate degree programme — and that admission has its own deadline, set by the department you are applying to, not by Knight-Hennessy.

So there are two clocks. The one on this page is the Knight-Hennessy clock. The other one belongs to your degree programme, and it is often earlier. Find it now, before you write anything.

Who this is not for

This is not a fees-and-maintenance scholarship. It is an elite, heavily contested fellowship attached to a US graduate degree, and most readers of this site will not be candidates. If what you need is help with college fees in India, the NSP and state schemes listed on this site are a far better use of your time.

If you are an Indian graduate with a strong record who is already thinking about a master's, PhD, MBA, JD or MD in the United States, this is one of the largest awards you can apply for.

The deadline, precisely

6 October 2026 at 1:00 p.m. Pacific Time, for the 2027 cohort. Pacific Time is twelve and a half hours behind India, so that cut-off lands in the small hours of the morning of 7 October in India. Do not plan to submit on the last day.

Can an Indian student apply? Yes, and explicitly so

The programme states that it encourages citizens and residents of all countries to apply, and that it has no quotas by discipline, programme, or world region. It also states there are no restrictions based on age, college or university, field of study, or career aspiration, and that it does not require applicants to seek endorsements from their college or any other institution.

That last point matters in India, where several international awards route applications through a nominating body. This one does not. You apply directly.

The two eligibility requirements

There are exactly two, and both must be met.

First, admission to Stanford. You must apply to, be accepted by, and enrol in a full-time Stanford graduate degree programme — including but not limited to DMA, JD, MA, MBA, MD, MFA, MPP, MS or PhD. You qualify if any one of these is true:

- You are applying separately but at the same time to Knight-Hennessy and to a full-time Stanford graduate programme, so that you would start both in the same year
- You have already been offered and deferred admission to a full-time Stanford graduate programme, and will start both in the same year
- You are a current Stanford graduate student adding a new full-time graduate programme, starting both in the same year
- You are a current Stanford PhD student in your first year, applying to start Knight-Hennessy in your second year

Second, the age of your degree. You must have earned a US bachelor's degree or its equivalent, from a college or university of recognised standing, in January 2020 or later, to join the 2027 cohort. An Indian bachelor's degree from a recognised university is the equivalent being referred to.

Three things worth knowing about that second rule:

- If you served in the military, the window is extended by two years — January 2018 or later
- If you are still an undergraduate, you are eligible provided you will earn your first degree by September 2027
- Within the window, there is no preference for a more recent degree. A 2020 graduate is not at a disadvantage against a 2026 one

Stanford programmes that do not qualify

Not every Stanford degree is eligible. The excluded ones are the Honors Cooperative Program, the Master of Liberal Arts, the Doctor of Science of Law (JSD) and the Master of Legal Studies (MLS), current Stanford PhD students adding an MA or MS in their own PhD discipline, and coterminal degrees. There is one exception on that last item: a current coterminal student is eligible if they apply to a new full-time Stanford degree through the external application process and begin both that degree and Knight-Hennessy in the same year.

There is no income criterion

Nothing in the eligibility rules refers to family income, and no income certificate or income proof is requested anywhere. This is a merit and leadership selection, not a means-tested scheme. If your family income rules you out of the Indian schemes on this site, it does not rule you out of this one.

What the money actually covers

Scholars receive funding for up to three years for any graduate degree at Stanford, applied to the degree you were preparing to enrol in when you were selected. In each of the first three years:

- A fellowship applied directly to tuition and associated fees
- A stipend for living and academic expenses — room and board, books, academic supplies, instructional materials, local transport, and reasonable personal expenses
- A travel stipend covering an economy-class ticket for one return trip to and from Stanford each year

On top of that:

- Newly enrolling scholars get a one-time relocation stipend, intended to offset some of the cost of moving and of technology purchases
- Scholars in their second and third years may apply for supplemental funds for academic enrichment, such as conference travel

One honest gap: the value of the living stipend is not published on the admission or funding pages. It is described but never quantified, so we are not going to attach a number to it. Ask the programme directly if the figure matters to your planning.

If your degree is longer than three years

Knight-Hennessy funds up to three years. Where the degree runs longer — an MD, a PhD, or a dual or joint degree — the rest is picked up according to your degree programme's own standard funding commitment, which varies by department and school. The published split is:

- MA, MBA, MFA, MPP, MS, JSM, MLS, LLM — up to six academic quarters, one to two years, no additional degree-programme funds
- JD — nine academic quarters, one to three years, no additional degree-programme funds
- MD — up to eleven quarters, not including the summer quarter of year one; the Medical School funds years four and five on its standard commitment of tuition support and stipend
- PhD and DMA — up to twelve quarters, being nine academic quarters plus three summers; the degree programme funds year four onwards
- JD/MBA — nine academic quarters; anything further is need-based through the graduate school's financial aid
- Medical Scientist Training Program (MD/PhD) — up to twelve quarters; the programme funds year four onwards

If you are admitted to a second Stanford graduate programme later, you may apply for additional Knight-Hennessy funding up to the three-year maximum, but it is not guaranteed.

The tax point, which nobody mentions until it is too late

Fellowship stipends are taxable in the United States. They are not subject to withholding, except for international students from a country without a tax treaty — so the tax is not deducted before you receive the money, and it is yours to budget for and pay. Knight-Hennessy does not reimburse scholars for taxes. Set money aside from the start rather than discovering this in your first filing season.

How to apply

Everything runs through the programme's own admission pages at knight-hennessy.stanford.edu. Two pieces of practical advice that follow from the rules above rather than from anywhere else:

- Work backwards from your Stanford department's deadline, not from 6 October. That is the date that will catch you out
- Start early. The Knight-Hennessy application asks for essays and references, and a 1 p.m. Pacific cut-off is less forgiving than it looks from India
