Andaman & Nicobar additional scholarship for ST students: ₹10,000 a year, last date 31 December
For Scheduled Tribe students domiciled in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands who have passed Class 12 and are studying anywhere in India. ₹1,000 a month for ten months, paid on top of any other scholarship you already receive, including the Ministry of Tribal Affairs one. There is no family income limit. Apply on the NSP by 31 December 2026.
This is money the Andaman and Nicobar Administration adds on top of what you already get. The notification is explicit that it is in addition to the scholarship and maintenance cost already awarded to ST students by the Department of Education and by the Ministry of Tribal Affairs. If you are already receiving one of those, this does not replace it.
It is run by the Directorate of Tribal Welfare, which is a different department from the OBC additional scholarship on this site — that one is Social Welfare, and it starts a stage earlier. Check which of the two you are reading.
Where this one starts
After Class 12. The eligibility clause requires that you have passed Senior Secondary (10+2) from a recognised board, or a higher examination from a recognised university, and are pursuing a post-senior-secondary course.
Students in Class XI, or in Class XII of a Multipurpose High School course, are expressly not eligible, because those are not higher or professional courses.
The exception is worth knowing, because it catches out families who assume the scheme is degrees-only. If your Class 10 examination is treated as equivalent to Matriculation and you went on to a recognised professional or technical course after it, you are treated as a post-matric student and you are eligible. That is what brings ITI and polytechnic students in.
Who can apply
- You belong to a Scheduled Tribe of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands as notified by the President under Article 342(1), in the A&N Islands Scheduled Tribes Order No. 58 of 31 March 1959
- You are a domicile of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands
- You have passed Class 12, or you passed Class 10 and joined a recognised professional or technical course
- You are in a regular, full-time course at a government-recognised institution, or one approved by AICTE or UGC, anywhere in India
There is no income limit
The notification sets no income ceiling anywhere in its five pages, and unlike the OBC scholarship run by Social Welfare, it does not ask for an income declaration either. Eligibility here is about community, domicile and the course you are in.
Which courses count
- All courses leading to a graduate degree: BA, B.Sc, B.Com and the rest
- All post-graduate courses: MA, M.Sc, M.Com, M.Ed, M.Pharma and similar
- M.Phil, PhD and post-doctoral programmes (D.Litt, D.Sc)
- Post-doctoral research in medicine, engineering, technology, planning, architecture, design, fashion technology, agriculture, veterinary and allied sciences, management, business finance and administration, computer science and applications
- Post-graduate diploma courses in management and medicine branches, and the Commercial Pilot Licence course including helicopter and multi-engine rating
- CA, ICWA, CS, ICFA and similar
- Degree, diploma or certificate courses needing Class 12: B.Pharm, B.Nursing, LLB, BFS, paramedical branches such as rehabilitation diagnostics, mass communication, hotel management and catering, travel, tourism and hospitality management, interior decoration, nutrition and dietetics, commercial art, and financial services such as banking, insurance and taxation
- All post-matriculation non-degree courses: the vocational stream, ITI, and three-year polytechnic diplomas
Who is not eligible
- Anyone repeating the same stage of education in a different subject. The notification's own examples: a B.Sc after a B.A, a B.Com after a B.A, an M.A after an M.A in another subject
- Anyone who has completed one professional course and is applying for another, such as an LLB after a B.T or B.Ed
- Students in Class XI or in Class XII of a Multipurpose High School course
One group is explicitly protected rather than excluded: if you were awarded this scholarship for a Bachelor's course in arts, science or commerce and failed to clear it, and you then join a recognised professional or technical certificate, diploma or degree course, the scholarship is still awarded, provided you are otherwise eligible.
Post-graduate students in medicine are eligible, on one condition — that you are not allowed to practise during the course.
What you get
₹1,000 a month, payable for ten months in an academic session. That is ₹10,000 a year, released directly to your bank account by the Directorate of Tribal Welfare.
The notification adds that it is normally admissible to students who passed the previous academic session.
Staying on it, and what happens if you fail
Once awarded, it runs from the stage at which it was given until you finish the course, renewed year to year as long as you are promoted and your Head of Institution certifies good conduct and regular attendance.
The failure rule is more forgiving than most, and precise:
- Fail the yearly examination for the first time, and the scholarship may still be renewed
- Fail a second time or after, and you bear your own expenses until you secure promotion to the next higher class
- Miss the annual examination through illness or another unforeseen event, and the award can be renewed for the next year on a medical certificate or other sufficient proof, with the Head of Institution certifying that you would have passed had you sat it
Things that can stop the money
- Changing your subject of study, or your institution, without prior approval of the A&N Administration. The Head of Institution has to report it to the Director (Tribal Welfare) and stop payment until approval comes through, and the amount already paid may be recovered
- Failure to make satisfactory progress, or misconduct such as taking part in strikes or irregular attendance without permission
- Discontinuing the course during the year, which makes you liable to refund
- A false statement in the application: the scholarship is cancelled, the money is recovered, and you are blacklisted from every Directorate of Tribal Welfare scholarship thereafter
How to apply
On the National Scholarship Portal at scholarships.gov.in. The board shows this scheme open from 3 August 2026 with student applications accepted until 31 December 2026 — a longer window than most, so there is no reason to leave it to December.
If you are applying on the NSP for the first time you are a Fresh applicant; if you held a scholarship under any NSP scheme in the immediately preceding academic year, you apply as a Renewal. Complete your One Time Registration before either.
The Secretary (Tribal Welfare) is the sanctioning authority.
