The documents you need for almost any scholarship in India
Missing paperwork stops more applications than ineligibility does. Here is the standard set, what each one is for, and which ones take weeks to obtain so you can start them early.
Start these early, they take the longest
- Income certificate. Issued by your tehsildar, SDM or the equivalent office. Most schemes want one issued in the current financial year, so an old one will not do.
- Caste or community certificate. If your scheme also asks for caste validity, that is a separate document and takes longer again.
- Domicile or residence certificate. Needed for every state scheme.
These you probably already have
- Previous year's marksheet
- Admission letter or fee receipt from your institution
- Bonafide certificate from your college office
- Aadhaar card
- Bank passbook, first page, showing your name, account number and IFSC
- Passport-size photograph
The one that quietly fails people
Your Aadhaar has to be seeded with your bank account for the money to reach you. Scholarship payments come through DBT, and DBT looks up your Aadhaar, not your account number. Plenty of approved students never receive the money for this single reason. See our guide on checking Aadhaar seeding.

Collect the income, caste and domicile certificates first. Everything else on this list can be arranged in a day.
