PM Scholarship Scheme 2026-27 for wards of police martyred in terror or naxal attacks: ₹36,000 a year for girls, ₹30,000 for boys, last date 31 October
A separate slice of the Prime Minister's Scholarship Scheme, added in 2019-20, for dependent children of state and union territory police personnel martyred during terror or naxal attacks. 500 scholarships a year of its own — 250 for boys, 250 for girls — so you are not competing against the much larger CAPF pool. Pays ₹3,000 a month to girls and ₹2,500 a month to boys for a first professional degree. No rank restriction, no income limit. On the NSP until 31 October 2026.
From the 2019-20 academic session, the Prime Minister's Scholarship Scheme was extended beyond the central forces to cover the dependent wards of state and union territory police personnel martyred during terror or naxal attacks. It runs on the same National Defence Fund money and the same Ministry of Home Affairs guidelines as the CAPF scheme, but it has its own quota — and that is the part worth understanding before you apply.
Why the separate quota matters
The main PMSS gives out 2,000 fresh scholarships a year for CAPF and Assam Rifles families. This category has an additional 500 scholarships a year, split equally: 250 for boys and 250 for girls. It is a separate pool. You are not ranked against the CAPF applicants, and the guidelines set no rank restriction for this category at all.
Who can apply
Dependent wards of state or union territory police personnel who were martyred during terror or naxal attacks. The scheme is worded around dependent wards here — the widow category is written into the CAPF side of the guidelines rather than this one.
You also need to be pursuing a first professional degree programme: engineering, medicine, dental, veterinary, BBA, BCA, B.Pharma, B.Sc in nursing or agriculture, MBA, MCA and similar recognised courses.
Your marks
- Fresh applicants need a minimum 60% in the Minimum Entry Qualification — Class 12, diploma or graduation, depending on the course you are entering
- If you passed Class 12 from CBSE, the percentage is calculated on your best five subjects out of 500
- For renewal, you must pass each subsequent academic year of the professional course with at least 50%
- A grace period of one year is allowed where a renewal application is submitted late
What you get
- ₹3,000 a month for girls, which is ₹36,000 a year
- ₹2,500 a month for boys, which is ₹30,000 a year
- Paid annually after selection, by direct transfer into the Aadhaar-seeded bank account
- For up to five years, depending on the duration of the course
Everyone selected under the fresh category also receives a personal letter from the Prime Minister.
The scholarship is admissible for two children per family, and your marital status does not affect eligibility.
The one document this scheme turns on
For every other PMSS category the paperwork is a service certificate or a discharge book. For this one it is a single specific document: a certificate issued by the concerned State Government stating that the police personnel was killed in terror or naxal violence.
The guidelines call this mandatory for applying. Without it the application does not qualify, no matter what else is uploaded. If your family does not already hold that certificate, start with the district police headquarters or the state home department — getting it issued is usually the long pole, not the NSP form.
For renewal applicants in this category, the rule is much lighter: a certificate issued by the educational institution is sufficient.
The rest of the documents
- Attested copy of your MEQ marksheet — Class 12, diploma or graduation
- Bonafide certificate from your institute or college
- Aadhaar, and a bank account in a nationalised bank with core banking, seeded with your Aadhaar number
NSP no longer collects bank account details in the fresh application. The money is sent to whichever account your Aadhaar is seeded with, so confirm that seeding is live and correct before you apply. If you hold a minor account, get it converted to a major account.
How to apply
Apply on the National Scholarship Portal at scholarships.gov.in before 31 October 2026. Do your One Time Registration first, then apply under the Prime Minister's Scholarship Scheme for wards of state and UT police personnel martyred during terror or naxal attacks. Your institute verifies the application on the portal after submission, so do not leave it to the last few days.
